If I wanted to make my website relevant in search engines, but the website itself is primarily a forum, I know this affects my page negatively in terms of traffic but do you have any tips to get around it or compensate for it?

Name the categories of your forum by using your main keywords. Make sure that each category has relevant posts (that’s what editors usually do), start getting traffic. But running a forum is tricky: if you don’t have traffic, your forum is dead, if you do - you have a lot of job….
try to link that forum to other furom site
